Ramsey Main St. Railroad Crossing NJDOT Closure & Repair Info

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (“NJ DOT”) in conjunction with New Jersey Transit Rail Operations (“NJ Transit”) will be making improvements to the Main Street railroad crossing in Ramsey.  This work is scheduled from Wednesday, August 2nd to Thursday, August 10th.  This project will necessitate a round-the-clock closure of Main Street at the NJ Transit rail crossing to vehicular traffic.  These improvements are part of the NJDOT order issued on March 8th, and include among other items, a total replacement of the crossing surface.

The detour plan will be for vehicles traveling eastbound on West Main Street to be detoured northbound onto North Central Avenue to the Gertzen Plaza railroad crossing and then to Church Street.  Vehicles traveling westbound on East Main Street will be detoured northbound onto Church Street to Gertzen Plaza and similarly over the Gertzen Plaza rail crossing and southbound onto North Central Avenue.

Items to note during the construction period of August 2nd to 10th

  • Main Street Railroad Crossing closure and detour are in effect round-the-clock
  • There will be NO PARKING on Church Street from Main Street to Gertzen Plaza
  • The Main Street Train Station will remain open and trains will operate on normal schedules
  • Commuter parking lots will remain open
  • Pedestrian crossings will be available and monitored by NJ DOT/NJ Transit personnel
  • The Borough understands the implementation of these improvements by the State will have an impact on residents, visitors and local businesses.   Since the Diagnostic Team meetings held last fall, the Borough has insisted on mitigating the impact to our community by performing these improvements during the summer, in particular August.  We look forward to an improved NJ Transit railroad crossing.
  • More detailed information for this project may be found on the Borough website, as well as NJ DOT and NJ Transit sites which will be updated closer to the project start date.
